Mother Tongue Day click to LISTEN
The country of Moldova celebrates National Language Day today, a day also known as Mother Tongue Day.

The holiday was created in part to distance the Republic of Moldova from Romania; while we do not have nearly enough time to discuss the complex political and emotional issues involved in contrasting the Romanian language with the Moldovan, we will note that over the past 16 years, the official language of the Republic has changed from Romanian to Moldovan . . . and that the linguists at the Romanian Academy (in Romania, not Moldova) have claimed that all Moldovan words are also Romanian words.

Confused yet? Add this last bit of trivia to the word picture. For a brief period, when the Moldovan region was firmly within the Soviet sphere of influence, the Latin alphabet was replaced with the Cyrillic. The Cyrillic alphabet was named for the ninth century Byzantine monk Saint Cyril. Although Cyril (who was also known as Constantine) did not invent the Cyrillic alphabet, he is credited with inventing the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest known Slavic alphabet.
