Go missing

It was back on this date in 1930 that Judge Joseph Force Crater disappeared from New York City. Despite a nationwide search, Crater seemingly fell off the face of the earth; the case was officially closed nine years later, when the judge would have been 50.

The public remains tantalized by that unsolved mystery. The phrase to pull a Crater was briefly in vogue with the meaning "to vanish in order to avoid facing something" and generations of comics have gotten a laugh with the line Judge Crater, call your office.

But we would guess that when Judge Crater disappeared, not one of his compatriots described him as having gone missing. Why? Because Americans didn't borrow that phrasing from the British until later in the 20th century.

British speakers have long used go missing or went missing to refer to someone or something being absent without explanation, but such wording became Americanized relatively recently. As commonly happens, the arrival of the new idiom was greeted both warmly (a scan of the citations shows go missing is firmly established in American English) and heatedly (as folks who are irked by the term point out the literal impossibility of going missing).

Whether you choose to use or refuse the go missing wording, know this: the phrase is idiomatic, and thus is unconstrained by literal meanings.
